Loca virosque cano (5) "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z (feat.Alicia Keys) New York (2009)

The Empire State Building [VS]

Why this title?

With "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z makes an obvious allusion to the Empire State Building , a symbol of New York, one of the landmarks of his skyline and a place worth visiting. The skyscraper was built in the early 1930s at the height of the Depression, in an Art Deco style. Towering over 380 feet, it again became the tallest building in the city after the 2001 attacks against the World Trade Center (3rd U.S. s behind the towers are Willis and Trump Chicago ). Jay-Z therefore chooses to describe his "state of mind" by letting us visit New York by taking the height while remaining " hood" and keeping your feet on the asphalt ... Two songs in different styles have certainly inspired in his choice of title, Billy Joel "New York State of Mind" and Nas (despite the "diss" What were the two famous TM) "New York State of Mind ", a title produced by DJ Premier. I propose an end of the article playlist some one of many titles that talk of NY.

"Empire State of Mind" could be just a song about New York, without doubt one of the cities that has most inspired musicians (and filmmakers). Yet it was a great success that is as much due to the personality of the interpreter that she is talking to New Yorkers and the world. When he travels with us "his" NY, Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z also talks one of the most known and loved worldwide . Over 40 million tourists visit the city in effect each year. Apart from Staten Island, Jay-Z takes us through all the boroughs of the city. Follow the guide ...

[Photos of New York that accompany this article I have received by Veronica and Sara. Photo-cons taken in the interpretation of the song before a final matches of the 2009 Base-Ball championship, won by the Yankees]

New York, a portrait

Must present New York ...
New York's 1.5 million people in Manhattan, 8 million throughout the city, 18.5 million in metropolitan and 22 million if one takes into account the metropolitan area that spans multiple states. is the most populous city in the United States to Los Angeles and Chicago. She was even the capital for five years from 1785 to 1790.
Precisely, let a little behind ...
Algonquin inhabited by Indians, the site was first spotted by Verrazzano (the bridge of the city bears his name) and named for the French New Angoulême in 1524. The Dutch and their allies (Hudson, Midnight and Stuyvesant who gave its name to Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Bed-Stuy or Brooklyn speaks Jay-Z) are masters of the house in the early seventeenth century and founded Nieuw Amsterdam in 1625. see on this map what looked like Manhattan beginning of this century. Then the English took possession of the premises in 1664. Thus was born New York .

South Manhattan from the Empire State Building [VS]

The city grows, more than a million inhabitants in the 1850s, 5 million in 1910. It is then the most populous city World . After peaking at nearly $ 8 million in the 1950s, she began a decline, as economic and demographic tax, before resuming its rise from the 1980 and exceed $ 8 million. The urban area of New York is currently third in the world by population (although this classification is difficult to establish). The city is one of the most dense (more than 10 000 inhabitants per km2, up more than 25 000 in Manhattan) and most diverse U.S. and the world.

New York has many nicknames as Big Apple, the "city that never sleeps" (two references used by Jay-Z), Gotham (in reference to Batman), or "the city up."

New York has five boroughs which are also counties. Manhattan (New York County) has 1,629,054 inhabitants, 1,397,287 Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings County) 2567098, 2306712 the Queens and Staten Island (Richmond County) is the least populated with 491.730 inhabitants.

New York City World

For specific functions, New York has a radiation across the planet that makes a global city or world. Since the nineteenth century, she became one of the most attractive cities.
diversity of its population is a reflection of the attraction. Gateway, the island Ellis Island in the Bay (near the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France in 1886, photo: VS), hosted more than 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. In the census of 2000, 35.9% of the population was of NY born abroad cons 11.1% for the entire country. Nearly half of New Yorkers (47.6%) speak a language other than English at home against 17.9% for the entire country. For two centuries, the world will meet you in New York, both low-skilled migrants that the brains of South and North, especially Asians (Indians, Koreans, Chinese) and Europeans.

Today, the communities most represented in the city are diverse and vary by district. The African Americans , only part of which is foreign born, representing over a quarter of the population of the city (higher proportion in the Bronx and Brooklyn). The Hispanics are about as likely as African-Americans (they account for nearly half the population of the Bronx) [Recall that those who call themselves Latinos or Hispanics in the census can also be classified in any other 'race or ethnic group "]. At the siatiques represent New Yorkers in ten but are more numerous in Queens. Locally, many neighborhoods have a community course overrepresented as Haitians in Brooklyn (I think Wyclef Jean), the Chinese and the Italians in East Manhattan [Photo Little Italy ; VS].

The foreign nationalities most represented in the city are the Dominicans (that greets Jay-Z), Chinese, Jamaicans, nationals of Guyana, Mexicans, Ecuadorians, Haitians, Trinidadians , Colombians and Russians. By region, 30% from the Caribbean, 24% Asian (including 4 in 10 of China), 19% from Europe, 9% of Central America and Mexico and 3% from Africa.

Madison Square Garden venue and place of meetings Basketball played by the New York Knicks. Jay-Z also has a share capital of the New Jersey Nets.
"Sittin 'courtside, Knicks & Nets give me high five" [SK]

Most rankings by economists and geographers (such as project GaWC or Mastercard ranking ) from the specific functions of large cities put New York ahead or in very early. Some elements of this radiation on a global scale:

  • First global financial marketplace with the NYSE and NASDAQ combined to Wall Street.
  • UN Headquarters .
  • Many headquarters of transnational companies (ABC, Colgate, American Express, Pfizer, Merrill Lynch, Time Warner ...).
  • Of prestigious cultural institutions and places whose cultural influence is global: The MoMA, Broadway plays and musicals, Harlem and the Bronx for black music, jazz [here the cons Apollo Theater; VS] in Rap. NY is the capital of the world art market.
  • Of prestigious universities (Columbia)
[VS]

All ingredients are present for New York is "The City That never sleeps."

New York City fragmented

The city is still very fragmented and highly unequal . One in five New Yorkers is poor while the house prices, inflated by the status of world city, is very high. The 20% richest and earn the equivalent of 50 times the income of the poorest 20% . The city has tens of thousands homeless. NY is also one of the cities (with Chicago) where the separation between whites and blacks is most pronounced. 85% of blacks would have to relocate to live in a racially mixed neighborhood (87% in Chicago. This is the index of dissimilarity Black-White).
Households who are getting richer, regardless of their ethnic group, tend to move farther into the suburbs. This does not facilitate the financing of public policy development and welfare. The city was even brink of bankruptcy during the 1970s. And renovation is a tendency to cause the departure or exclusion of the poorest neighborhoods. This gentrification affects many parts of Manhattan, particularly Harlem. This applies also to Tribeca, downtown Manhattan neighborhood inhabited now Jay-Z. In the "Triangle Below Canal," the old industrial buildings have become very popular lofts, leading to a strong recovery in real estate. The

inner city areas like the Bronx birthplace of rap , part of Queens and Brooklyn remain in ghettos which are concentrated the poor and minorities (African Americans and Hispanics). This is true of Marcy Projects, where the HLM grew Jay-Z, like Bed-Stuy, the city of Notorious BIG

The New York Jay-Z [Aug]

Jay-Z: the small dealer in Marcy New Sinatra

Who is Jay-Z? It is both an astute businessman, a founder and leader of label and one of the rappers selling the most records for over a decade.

Photomontage for a mixtape: Jay-Z and Notorious BIG died in 1999

Born Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn in 1969, he grew up in the Marcy Projects of public housing with his mother, his brother and two sisters. His father left the family home in the early 1980s. It is sometimes nicknamed "Jazzy." In high school (Westinghouse High School), he meets one Christopher Wallace, better known then as the Notorious BIG . But his adolescence is mainly occupied by the deal crack. The song tells us that he bought in Harlem for Sale in Marcy. Yet in the late 1980s, he tried to rap, most notably with rapper Big Jaz . He toured with him, especially in England. He participated in the album of it: Word To The Jaz in 1989. He then part of a group, Original Flavor, in the early 1990s. Despite the failure of their second album Beyond Flavor (1994), Shawne's talent is evident in the title "Can I Get Open".
"Yellow cab gypsy cab, cab dollar, holla back" [VS]

After the band split, Jay-Z went solo and decided to create his own label Roc- A-Fella with friends Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. After a few singles like "In My Lifetime," the first album released in 1996: Reasonable Doubt who immediately becomes a classic. His flow specific, very nasal voice and his words searched quickly make a master among MCs, like BIG The years that followed saw scroll as many albums and success. After My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997) and Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life (1998) is Vol. 3 Life and Times of S. Carter in 1999. In 2000, he delivered Dynasty Roc-A-Fella Familia. Then in September 2001, The Blueprint where he started, the song "Takeover" his argument, his "diss " with Nas, another figure of NY (Prodigy of Mobb Deep and Jayo Felony are also in their degree). Albums continue to chain themselves until 2003 when the Black Album seems to pause in his career. It has indeed reached some kind of maturity and authority over the rap game New York who actually one of the most important and most influential rap east coast.

"right there up on Broadway, pull me back to McDonald's That" [SK]

We see so many in the business category (it has a share capital of the New Jersey Nets that would relocate to Brooklyn) or the Peoples of since it is the companion of singer R 'n B Beyoncé. At that time, he became the leader of the prestigious label Def Jam Russell Simmons founded by in 1980 (affiliated to Universal since). He has since taken a step back in this area is returned to rap with success by recording his 11th album, The Blueprint 3 which include "Empire State of Mind". As is the case since 2001, he works primarily with producer rapper became Kanye West , but also with other producers such as No ID and The Neptunes.
Alicia Keys, Jay-Z that accompanies this song is also from New York. She was born in Harlem in 1981. She sings, composes and plays piano in various styles, with a strong soul influence and R'n B. His debut album Songs in A Minor was released in 2001 and was a resounding success. She has since recorded three more albums. Personally, I like the title "Superwoman" contained in As I Am (2007)

But enough words for the music! Here's the clip, also very successful, we have very Times Square and other places mentioned by Jay-Z. I propose then the lyrics with a translation and details of some places.
