Student and Monteverdi's successor at the ducal chapel of St. Mark (Venice), Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676 ) is mostly known for his operas for his sacred music. Too bad, because this Salve Regina full of devotion, surprises (for its changes of rhythm) deserves to be read and heard more often. Composed for male voices (ATTB), this piece probably reflects the precarious state of the actual choir Venetian. Indeed, the 1630 Venice was ravaged by the plague ... For the score, here
